Canada’s Vegan Wineries

KARLO ESTATES

“Karlo Estates was the first winery to be certified vegan and started making wine in 2008. Not only are their wines vegan certified – including the packaging (so you don’t have to believe them), but all of their food offerings are always vegan. Even the two principals, Sherry Karlo and Saxe Brickenden are vegan, so, Karlo is as vegan as it gets.”

TWO SISTERS VINEYARDS

“We are pleased to have all of our Two Sisters wines crafted to meet the guidelines for vegan wine production. They are made in the absence of any animal products whatsoever. We have loved working with Priya and Jen to pair our wines with select vegan foods and especially the great cheeses!”

MALIVOIRE WINE COMPANY

“Our objective is always to let the character of the vintage and the vineyard shine through in our wines. To that end, we take a very minimal interventionist approach to winemaking. We also benefit greatly from our gravity process, in which very little extraction of harsh flavours occurs, reducing the need to fine. However, when we do require fining, we choose plant- or earth-based fining agents such a pea protein, potato protein and bentonite clay. The amazing uses and potential of the power of plants has found its way into the wine world and we have embraced this idea whole heartedly.”

DOMANINE QUEYLUS

“At Domanine Queylus we believe in sustainable viticulture. The vines are grown organically (uncertified) out of respect for the precious, fragile soils of the Niagara Bench. No synthetic herbicides or insecticides are used. Each vineyard is cared for by hand, including pruning; shoot-thinning; shoot positioning; leaf pulling; green harvesting; and not forgetting the hand-harvesting of the entire crop. All of our wines are 100% vegan; no animal products are used at any point during production.”

CAVE SPRINGS

“Our wines are crafted with a focus on place. This means in the winery we take a minimalist approach to our winemaking, using little to no additives in our wines. Instead, we choose to use traditional techniques, such as indigenous fermentations, neutral barrel aging and extended lees contact to express the nature of our terroir.”

Southbrook organic vineyards

“At Southbrook we strive to make wines with the least negative impact on the land, while encouraging and implementing regenerative practices. This includes the use of solar power, the cleansing of water before release it back into the water system, and the regeneration of soils thru the use of non-chemical fertilizers. We do not use any animal byproducts in the winemaking process choosing instead to use bentonite clay as a fining agent.”

www.southbrook.com

Bachelder Niagara

“We are minimalists from the get-go… we want the signature of our wines to be the terroir from whence they come, and not any human intervention! We press both Chardonnay, Gamays, and Pinot Noirs very lightly, we ferment with indigenous yeasts, and practice long élévages (18-22 months) in mostly-neutral French oak 228 litre barrels, so that the young, more simple primary varietal fruit abates into something more expressive, more textured, more refined, with more terroir or ‘sense of place. We don’t rack, we don’t pump, we don’t stir the barrels, we rarely fine, and never with any animal products! A light filtration and then to bottle for 6 months bottle-bouquet ageing prior to release!”

Frogpond farm

“As Ontario's first certified organic winery, we have been crafting small-batch, vegan friendly wines since 2001. We strive to be conscientious stewards of land and water resources and to create a balanced ecosystem on the farm. Thus, no synthetic pesticides or fertilizers are used in our vineyard. Our winemaking approach is low intervention and we do not use animal based products (gelatin, isinglass, egg whites or casein) to fine or clarify wine. Our wines are left to clear naturally by gravity. We believe that creating harmony in nature is the prerequisite for truly authentic wine.”

Since 2002, our cool-climate hybrid vineyard is sustainably managed and we continue this low intervention practice in the cellar. All of our small-batch wines are made without the use of animal products. They're as authentic as the winemaker. Each limited case vintage is a true reflection of each growing season.

Rosewood Estates Winery & Meadery

With each passing vintage, we attempt to learn how the varying seasonal conditions impact the distinct flavours, textures and focus of our wines. It is for this reason that we choose not to add any exogenous products, such as selected yeast, nutrients or fining agents to further cloud the already complex matrix of wine.

That being said, we believe a wine’s first job is to be delectable. If we need to intervene to prevent a wine from being anything but delicious, we will take corrective action, but we will approach that decision pragmatically and with complete transparency.

“Beaumont Family Estate Vineyards was established in 1995 by the Lubchynski Family, in West Kelowna B.C. As stewards of the environment, they investigated the best kinds of grapes to grow and embarked upon the more labour-intensive organic farming methodology. They have systematically built up 36 acres of Certified Organic Grapes on the southern volcanic rich slopes of Boucherie Mountain. Winemaker and daughter Alana has tended to the vines from a young age and her winemaking philosophy is to guide the wine gently along its natural and vegan path, while encouraging its own personality.
